DONNIE YEN GOES 3D FOR THE MONKEY KING

May 18, 2010

Becoming a box office miracle with IP MAN, Donnie Yen Chi Tan has already confirmed to participate in the title role of the 300 million 3D IMAX action film THE MONKEY KING (DAI LAU TIN GUNG). The film company yesterday released the film poster, in which Chi Tan was merged with a monkey body. He held the sea stabilizing needle and leaped out of the Water Curtain Cave in the Flower Fruit Mountain. Chi Tan personally confirmed the news. "The role of Sun Wukong to me absolutely will be a gigantic challenge."

THE MONKEY KING will be a Filmko Entertainment, Mandarin Films and Beijing Wenhua Dongrun joint investment of 300 million RMB with Soi Cheang Po Shui as its director. The investors felt that Chi Tan who has real kung fu, good acting and luck with the audience all in one is the only choice for Sun Wukong. After beaing foreigners, Chi Tan this time will fight demons. He confidently said, "I am very confident about playing Sun Wukong this time and thoroughly interpret the character." As for the film's other 12 important characters like Bull King, Princess Iron Fan, Jade Heavenly Emperor, Bodhi Old Ancestor, Erlang Shen, Nezha and fox demon, top Chinese superstars of three lands on both sides of the strait will perform them. The production will officially start at the end of the year, but as early as mid September last year the film's special effect team that has participated in the LORD OF THE RING films, New Zealand's Weta Digital, has secretly arrived in China and began the film's Heavenly Palace, Sea Dragon Palace, and Fire Mountain fantasy scene location survey.

Oh, crap! Donnie babe, I'm gettin' sick of the period pieces and now 3D flyin'. Get back to a modern flick. I'm not wasting my time on 3D Monkey King.

Donnie Yen to Transform Himself into The Monkey King

-- The Monkey King --

With the box office success of Donnie Yen's films in the past 2 years, such as the most recent Ip Man 2 which has just passed the 200m yuan mark in China, not only Donnie Yen, who is currently filming The Lost Bladesman (Guan Yun Chang) and just finished a fight scene with Andy On, is highly sought after by filmmakers and investors alike, but he's also getting a big, fat pay cheque.

Filmko CEO Alex Wong announces that Donnie Yen would be playing the eponymous character Sun Wu Kong in The Monkey King, budgeted at 300m yuan and shot in 3D IMAX. Alex Wong, who would not reveal the actual pay Donnie Yen is getting, says, "Donnie Yen is certainly worthy of the salary of 20m yuan that he commands, he is such a huge box office draw."

This has been confirmed by Donnie Yen's manager, "The role of the Monkey King is a big challenge to Donnie Yen, and something worth trying out, and Donnie Yen is very confident in handling the role well."

Presently only Monkey King Sun Wu Kong is confirmed. 12 other main characters remain to be filled up, including Bull Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, Jade Emperor, Ancient Ancestor Bodhi, Erlang Shen, Nezha, etc. Apparently, Chow Yun Fatt and Louis Koo would also be onboard.

Building the fantasy sets is a costly affair, with around 50m yuan being allocated. The Water Curtain Cave and Mountain of Fruits & Flowers will be shot on location in Zhang Jia Jie, Hunan. Production begins in November, with a proposed release in Feb 2012. Following that, Donnie Yen would be teaming up with Tony Jaa in a co-production with Thailand in 2011.

According to this article, Chow Yun Fat and Louis Koo is reported to have signed on too and will have fight scenes with Donnie.

Im still having trouble picturing Donnie as the Monkey King. I still feel he is more appropriate to play Er-Lang Shen, but if Chow Yun Fat and Louis Koo is joining and having fight scenes with him, I think it's likely that Koo will play that role instead.

Perhaps, that's why he took up this role - the challenge. Most would think he's more suitable for the sterner Erlang Shen rather than playful Monkey King. But makeup should help a lot there to make him look monkeyish.

And thought that they should cast some martial artist as Erlang Shen (in other words, not Louis Koo for this role, though it might just be so) since that's the most important fight there.  I would imagine Chow Yun Fat as Lao Zi or Jade Emperor.

I also immediately thought Chow Yun Fat would be suitable to play the Jade Emperor. But if he'll be having fight scenes with Donnie like the reports suggest, he might play another God. Perhaps Li Jing? Then again, it's way too early to guess. There's plenty of characters to be filled and I'll be interested to see which big names they'll cast
