There's an English title for Jin Yi Wei now, 14 BLADES. Here's a synopsis from Twitch

Quote
During the Ming Dynasty, the Emperor of China possessed one weapon greater than all others, the Jinyiwei, an elite force of assassins recruited from street orphans. Trained in clandestine combat from childhood, the Jinyiwei were masters of the 14 Blades, eight being for torture, five for killing, and the last blade being reserved for suicide when a mission failed. Above the law, with a license to kill, the Jinyiwei devoted their lives and lethal prowess to the service of the Emperor alone.

When the Imperial Court is taken over by evil eunuch JIA, the best of the Jinyiwei, QUINGLONG and XUANWU, are assigned to steal a list identifying those still loyal to the Emperor. However unbeknownst to Quinglong, the Jinyiwei have fallen under the control of Jia, and during the mission Quinglong is betrayed by Xuanwu and barely escapes with his life. Now as the most wanted man in the land Quinglong must seek out and rally the loyalists to rise against Jia and restore the Emperor to power. In his way are the deadliest assassins in the land, his former brethren, the Jinyiwei.

The Chinese media are saying it'd start shooting in late May, once Vicki Zhao finishes Mulan as well as its publicity campaign.

And what about Donnie Yen, isn't he doing Bodyguards right now?

Can't say I'm interested, Daniel Lee is always bad news to me. I'll wait for further more of the movie though.

Hahaha...agreed lol

To be honest, I like the story that its based off of. You dont really see many Ming Dynasty action films nowadays so thats good I guess. Not a big fan Daniel Lee. If a director like Andrew Lau or Zhang Yimou was directing then I would be alot more confident in the final piece. Oh well, just hope for the best. Dante Lam surprised me with Beast Stalker so maybe Daniel Lee can too

Dante Lam's pretty good for a director. Up to this point, I've seen The Beast Stalker and Beast Cops, both awesome movies.

The usual press conference will be held tomorrow (May 14) and the cast will make an appearance including Donnie, Vicki Zhao, Wu Zun and Qi Yuwu (who played the Lizard guy in Painted Skin)

Here's a Sina subsite for 14 Blades with some locations, character art concepts: http://ent.sina.com.cn/f/m/jyw/index.shtml

Donnie Yen in for Bond-esque actioner

'14 Blades' will be directed by Daniel Lee

By Patrick Frater

May 12, 2009

CANNES -- Donnie Yen is to star in "14 Blades," a martial arts actioner being positioned as a "Chinese James Bond movie."

Production is set to begin this week in Ningxia, China, under the direction of Hong Kong's Daniel Lee ("Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon," "Black Mask").

The film, budgeted at $20 million, is produced by "Three Kingdoms" producer Susanna Tsang through her Hong Kong-based Visualizer Film Prods. and mainland China's Shanghai Film Group. World sales (excluding China, Singapore and Malaysia) are being handled by Easternlight, the Asian label of L.A.-based sales outfit Arclight Films.

The screenplay by Lee and Abe Kwong is set within Jinyiwei, a 14th century intelligence agency that hired street orphans and trained them as assassins who employed an arsenal of blades for torture and assassination. The story involves a licensed killer who has to overthrow a puppetmaster who has usurped the powers of the rightful emperor. The picture also stars Zhao Wei.

" '14 Blades' is really the first James Bond film from China and is based on historical fact," Tsang said. "Audiences from China and abroad have never seen this type of Chinese movie before."

I read this Frater piece yesterday and I'm wondering how this film or any of the characters are in any way 'Bond-esque'? WTH is Bond-esque?

Bond is a high level British Agent who works mostly alone, except for the occasional chick.

There is nothing of Bond is this film. Huh?

Press conference held today with director, major cast attending. The action director for the movie will be Guk Hin Chiu. I'm lowering my expectations even more for this one.

Guk Hin-Chiu is one of Yuen Woo Ping's main co-action directors, if I'm correct.
