During the press conference, Wilson Yip was asked about the role of Bruce Lee in the sequel and he said that personally, he feels Jay Chou is suitable for the role among the new generation of actors today o But he does say that it's just his personal thinking and that if they were to find someone else to play Bruce, they would find a new face globally.

I really hope he doesn't mean it...

Jay Chou? Oh for pete's sakes! NO Jay Chou! Has Wilson fallen on his head lately? Dude, that would ruin the film.

Director eyes pop singer to star as Bruce Lee
12/22/2008 | 05:28 PM

HONG KONG — He lists Jet Li as one of his idols, penned a song called "Nunchucks" and his most recent movie is called "Kung Fu Dunk." Now he's in the running to star as the ultimate martial arts icon — Bruce Lee.

Hong Kong director Wilson Yip said Monday he's considering Taiwanese pop sensation Jay Chou for the role of Lee in the sequel to his recently released film "Ip Man," a biography of Lee's kung fu master.

Also in his sights to star as the king of kung fu cinema is another singer-turned-actor, Hong Kong's Aaron Kwok.
"Aaron Kwok will bring his unique qualities to the role of Bruce Lee. Jay Chou will bring his unique qualities.

I will prepare a different script for each actor and see who is interested," Yip told The Associated Press.

He said Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen will reprise his role as the title character, Ip Man.

"Ip Man" is based on the life of the legendary master of wing chun — a kung fu style that traces its roots to a monk from the famed Shaolin Temple.

The film ends with Ip's move from his southern Chinese hometown of Foshan to neighboring Hong Kong to escape the Communist takeover of the mainland. It was in Hong Kong where Ip met 13-year-old Lee and took him under his wing.

Yip said the follow-up film will focus on Ip's relationship with his most famous disciple.

Polly Chan, a publicist for Hong Kong's Mandarin Films Ltd., confirmed that the company has plans to make a sequel but the final decision depends on the box office results for the original.

"Ip Man" took in about 30 million Chinese yuan ($4.4 million) on its opening weekend Dec. 12 in China, a solid performance in a country where a movie that makes 100 million yuan ($15 million) is considered a hit.

Lee, who died in Hong Kong in 1973 at age 32 from swelling of the brain, was born in San Francisco but grew up in Hong Kong, where he launched his big screen career as an international martial arts superstar.

His credits include "The Chinese Connection," ''Enter the Dragon" and "Return of the Dragon." - AP

Say it ain't so!

I read about Aaron kwok too... I'd say NO to both Kwok and Chou. Chan Kwok Kwan is my first choice

Aarok Kwok? lol Wilson Yip has gone crazy. Kwok is supposed to play a young Bruce Lee. Kwok may be older than Donnie or near his age,lol Thats worse than Jay Chou. I say just find a totally unknown kid to play the young Bruce Lee. Dont find some famous actor to play him because thats just going to give audiences the wrong expectations. Find a young kid with a good of mix of looks and martial ability to play the young Bruce. hold on, how old is Bruce Lee supposed to be in the next film? Like 13 or more like 20?

I assume it will be a different character but since a scene on the HK DVD actually reveals the fate of Master Kam, it's hard to tell.

They better bring back Xing Yu too! And give the guy a role where he for once doesn't die.

That scene is included on the DVD's deleted scene (same with Gordon Lam's scene) so not sure if we have to just take it that he died.

Ip Man 2 May Still Focus on... Ip Man

-- Ip Man 2 --

During an interview, Raymond Wong was asked about the progress of Ip Man 2. He says that director Wilson Yip and his son Edmond Wong, script writer for the film, have been to Foshan to collate information, and Bruce Lee might not be appearing in the immediate sequel (or at least not until the third movie), "Right now, the script hasn't reached Bruce Lee's part, and the sequel's budgeted at around 100m yuan. We're considering building sets."

As to Fan Siu Wong and Lam Ka Tung's characters, "In the original film, they're supposed to be dead, but owing to Mainland censorship, the scenes depicting their deaths were cut, so, they'd still have a chance to appear in the sequel."

On being asked about The Great Master, Wong Kar Wai's version, starring Tony Leung, Gong Li, Chang Chen, with Yuen Wo Ping, who just completed filming True Legend in January, being approached to be the choreographer, that begins production in a few months, Raymond Wong says Wong Kar Wai's style is different, and it's wonderful for him to shoot it.

On Donnie Yen, Lam Ka Tung and Fan Siu Wong receiving Hong Kong Film Awards nominations for their roles in Ip Man, Raymond Wong thinks Donnie Yen and Lam Ka Tung stand good chances.

So, they're going to stretch this into three movies now? All I can say is that if Tsui Hark EVER gets around to making Seven Swords 2, this better not keep Donnie out of the film.

I want SS2 more than Ip Man 2.

I don't mind the idea of this being stretched out. It's something like Jet Li's Wong Fei Hung movies, it seems. It'll get thinner plotwise and more intense actionwise until they give up, but any more movies along these lines sounds promising to me. Maybe I'm just lame.

And, despite having watched that particular deleted scene, no part of me would be sad were Fan Siu Wong to be included in further movies. The guy was fantastic.

Update - Wilson Yip in a phone interview said that a big star (who he didn't name) will join Ip Man 2, playing a teacher of another kung fu school.

Kind of early to be starting the buzz, isn't it Wilson?

Let the speculation begin!

As long as it isn't Jackie. I don't think they could afford Jackie.

I think it would be nice in a way if it were Jet Li. It's not, I know, but Donnie gained some of his first real notoriety facing off against Li in Li's own legendary biopic. Kind of a fair return, right?

Ha. Doubt it'll be anyone of the sort. Especially since, no matter how cool Jet has been, I don't think he could possibly stand up to the rigors of a DY fight sequence these days. More likely some relatively newer action star or some other quality actor to fill a noncombat part.

Okay, I didn't say anything that everybody didn't already know. Oops. But I'm bored, and these things happen.
