Answer

·  What is DY.us?

DY.us is www.donnieyen.us- a news/info resource for english speaking fans [in whatever variant they may manifest] of Donnie Yen. It was created as a result of many English speaking Donnie Fans who managed to find each other lamented that there wasn't a community for them. It was up and running for testing on 26 July 2004 and went live 14 Aug 2004. Soon after, it was adopted by the Chinese Fan sites to become the US Branch of the DYN Fan Group

·  I want to be apart of the magic..but uh how?

DY.us will accept 'Staff' to help with posting up infomation, contributing, translations, uploading to the Gallery, moderating the forums, and general housekeeping until, well, there's enough. If you think you can contribute, please contact anyone on staff. There's a thread on the Info Board of the MB with what we're looking for. Or if you want to keep it on the down low, send an email to staff AT donnieyen DOT us.

·  I'm having a problem with [insert problem]

If you have a problem, check the Technical Difficulties FAQ. If you're problem isn't addressed there, post in the Technical Difficulties board of the MB. It allows anyone to post. Please try to be as detailed as possible and we'll get you sorted. As the site grows and requires upgrades, some bugs might occur. Don't hesitate to report ANY difficulty you encounter. Remember, everything works for the Admins and they may not know something's amiss

·  How do I make a suggestion?

Post in the Feedback board of the MB. There are threads where you can post up images you'd like for avatars, give your two cents in regards to site changes and the like. And if you want to gush about the site, feel free. We'll love ya all the more

·  I have a message for Donnie, can you give me his contact info?

Sure! You can email him at donnie_yen AT hotmail DOT com.

No, I meant a real one, like one he'll definately read

Ohhh, that one.

donnie_yen AT hotmail DOT com

We don't have any contact info beyond what's listed at his site. He may not have the time to reply back to every one he gets, let alone read, but according to his site, he does read the mail sent there. What's more is that even if we did have contact info beyond what's been made available, we would not give it out. Would you like your information splayed out all over the Net? Bad fan, bad!

But..but..my message...?

There, there. We won't leave you hanging like that! Apart from mailing the fan mail email, you can also post a message here. That's why we made the Talk to Donnie board of the MB. Announce your love/appreciation/worship/idolization/form-your-fandom-takes there; that's what it's there for, don't let it feel neglected, 'kay?

·  My question isn't addressed here, what can I do?

Post in the Technical Difficulties board of the MB if you're registered or use the Contact link. The FAQ is a dynamic thing and will be updated as need be to help ya'll out.

·  Who's who around here?

See the Staff page for a listing of people that work to make DY.us the site that it is.

·  What's with this DYN stuff I keep seeing? What is it?

May we present to you, DY.us History 101. Sit down, it'll only hurt for a bit..unless you're a slow reader. DY.us started on 26 July 06 [domain was purchased].  It launched on 14 Aug 2004. Previous to that the wily seekers of DY.net discovered that donnieyen.us was coming soon to a browser near you. It generated some excitement that there was a soon to be site, devoted to Donnie, in the states. The coming soon page stated that the webmaster would like for DY.us to pair up with the Chinese Fan Club as an English resource for English speaking fans.

Fast Forward to the Grand Launch!  The site gets a warm welcome by the community of fans, and bob's your uncle, DY.us gets asked to be apart of the Family. Obviously the answer was yes, and DY.us became the US branch of the DYN Fan Group

So, you're thinking, DYN is...? Petulant reader! We're getting to it. The Donnie Yen Network [DYN] Fan Group, is a group of fan sites that came together to distribute news and information about Donnie's latest projects to his fans around the globe. The other sites are Donnie's Chinese Fan Club, www.donnieyen.net and www.donnieyen.org [Big5, Taiwan Branch] as well as the Japanese branch, www.donnieyen.info US branch, [DY.us] and the newly added Korean Branch, http://cafe.naver.com/donniefanpy.cafe. Of course, it's not a fan site, but the Official Site is also considered part of the DYN, because well, it's Donnie's Official Site.

So you might be thinking...big whup. But here are some highlights of how this network benefits you, the fan:

Japan Premiere's Nov 04 article on SPL: It hit newsstands in Japan on 21 Sept. Raphy, the owner and operator of DY.info, picked it up, scanned the article and then translated it from Japanese to English. It was then handed over to the family where DY.us polished up the English version and where 77 and greentea [web goddesses of DY.net and DY.org respectively] translated it for the Chinese speaking fans. The article is now available at each site in their retrospective Interview sections.

Sina Chat on 19 Mar: On 19 Mar 05, Donnie was invited to hold a chat with Sina. He discussed Seven Swords, his approach to fleshing out roles, Bruce Lee and much more. The transcript was 4 pages long. 77 of .net translated it in parts to English, where .us refined the text and raphy of .info translated it in to Japanese. The chat is now available in each site's retrospective Interview sections

SPL's 1st trailer:Exclusive to the DYN, SPL's first trailer was hosted on each site so that fans had easy access to it [servers hosted in China and stateside]. Available at first in flash format, it was later converted to .rm to help those that couldn't get the flash to load.

News Source: Donnie's been doing a lot of work in Hong Kong, shooting films around China, so a lot of news for his work is reported by Chinese news. Through this grouping, fans aren't left in the dark if they're linguistically challenged. Which is the big reason for the group's existence. Fan site wouldn't be a fan site without the help and labors of love from the fans. [cheekiness]Who feels warm n fuzzy now, who? [/cheekiness]

News/pics via Donnie: Yes you read that right. And yes, this was purposely listed last. Donnie is gracious enough to send in messages/Xclusive content on occasion to the DYN. If you weren't totally convinced when you read interviews where he expresses his thanks for the support he gets, perhaps look at his participation as him thanking his fans for all their support in the many ways it manifests. He doesn't have to, but he takes a moment every now and then to send word of upcoming events.

·  What's with this UN stuff that's all over the site?

DY.us- we're UN, baby!

You'll see that alot. Why? Because that's what DY.us is. UN. It was mostly to emphasize that we are an UNofficial fan site, however, it's so much more than that. If you haven't picked it up by now, .us has its own essence and flavor. The owner, Chelle, fesses to not being a typical fan and will say Bad Things™ as necessary. .us's PR person, Nightbird, is quick to hand out the tough love in regards to Donnie and his work. In fact, you'll find a lot of his fans [at least here] also have that unapologetic charm for telling it like it is.

It's an attitude, a state of mind and it isn't one definitive thing. We're left of the middle, just cause what's typical just doesn't fit us. And we're UNapologetic about it.

Question

·  How do I submit something?

·  What is this business about AOL and registering?

·  How do I activate my account?

·  I tried sending a PM but was told I couldn't. What gives?

Answer

·  How do I submit something?

Users can submit Downloads, Reviews, Info bits and Links.

Downloads:: The Media Center allows registered users to upload their own pics and media which will be approved by Staff. Navigate to the Media Center. Click on File Upload in the upper right, choose how many boxes you need [You can choose to browse your own computer, or input in links to the media you want to upload]. Click Continue. Browse/fill in the links to the media you want to upload, click Continue. Staff will be notified of the upload awaiting approval.

  • Please give us as much information as possible. DY.us tries hard to make sure info sources are credited and/or courtesied properly. Bear this in mind when submitting. This is not a popularity contest.
  • Please provide some kind of name with your submission so that you are credited properly. An alias is more than fine, and if you wish to remain anonymous, please express your wish and we will honor it.

·  What is this business about AOL and registering?

AOL mail servers are nortorious for having no mercy in regards to domains that are labled as spammers. There has also been a huge instance of domains being mislabled as spammers due to some users not realizing the totality of their action when labeling unwanted mail as spam versus unsubscribing As it stands now, AOL emails are acceptable. But should the site begin having problems [warnings about spam activity], we will be forced to reject all incoming account requests using an AOL email account for the sake of the site and subsequently suspending any existing accounts with AOL emails until a substitute email can be supplied.

·  How do I activate my account

When you registered, an email was sent to the email address you specified. If you used a fake one, please leave a note in the Technical Difficulties board. Someone will try and dig your info up and get you square. Please note, that the email you provide is where topic reply notifications, newsletters and news from the site is sent. DY.us will only send mass mails when the situation calls for it [Read: usually to notify of BIG news or Exclusives to the DYN that you might want first notice of].

If you're waiting on your activation email, there are a few possibilities:

  1. You're using a webmail service like hotmail or yahoo. Most likely your activation email is sitting in your junk/bulk mailbox. Leave a note in the Technical Difficulties board to have Staff resend the email if you believe it was deleted by your mail program.
  2. You're mail filters might be thinking the email from the site is spam. If this is the case, simply add donnieyen.us as a safe domain. All mail from the site will come from admin AT donnieyen DOT us. If you think it was deleted by mistake, let the Staff know.
  3. You used a fake email. You need a valid, working email in order to register.
If you click on the link to activate your account and get a user doesn't exist error, you replied after the time period allowed and were removed from the database. You will need to sign up again. Or you can leave your desired username and email in the Technical Difficulties board. Staff will make an account then send you a temp password so you can log in and run amuck.

·  I tried sending a PM but was told I couldn't. What gives?

The site won't let you PM the user name Donnie Yen. Reasons why, I would like to think are obvious. There is a section of the MB set aside to send messages to Mr. Yen and he also has a fan email [donnie_yen@hotmail.com] where you can send messages to him. We ask that you please use those for any messages you want to send.  Donnie Yen.us is not a means to get in contact with Mr. Yen.  On the rare occasion that Mr. Yen logs in with the username set aside for him, we do not want for him to be swamped with messages. We ask for your understanding and to please respect this stance.

Quotage

I strongly felt that to distinguish ourselves we needed to emphasize the individual style and character of the martial artist.
