From the director at the movie's Press Conference:
" Yip Man came from an affluent family and was deeply engrossed in the studies and research of martial arts. At this time, his family undergoes severe changes, losing all its wealth. He has no choice but to take part in resistance activities, stirring up the folks to rise up against invasion. How would he and his friends and families go through trials in life, all these are in the movie."
Synopsis:
Ip Man is adapted from the life story of Ip Man, the grand master of the Wing Chun style of kung fu and sifu (master) of legendary kung fu superstar Bruce Lee. This movie will be the first important record of the master's life. Ip's persistent devotion to Wing Chun is a classic example of the love and respect shown to wushu and the freedom and spirit it represents. Jun Ma's endeavor brings him squaring off against three brothers of a Vietnam Gang: Ja Ge [Ray Lui], Tony [Ngai Sing aka Colin Chou], and Tiger [Xing Yu]. The gang are all badass in their own right and not to be trifled with, but Jun Ma isn't exactly a pushover either. The Trio are trying to take out their rival, Lin Kwok Pun, but the cinch is that one of Jun Ma's men is undercover [Loius Koo as Wang Sah or WIlson] with Lin Kwok Pun. In an attempt to kill Lin Kwok Pun by the gang, the undercover operation is a bust. That's when thing's get real interesting. [s1]

Synopsis:
Tiger Wong, student of the Dragon Tiger Gate, is an exceptionally skilled martial artist with a strong sense of justice and benevolence. "Gate" is a word describing martial arts sect or organization. While dining at a floating restaurant, he chances upon a high level triad meeting and notices a family being tormented for kicks. Enraged by the sight he stops the tormentors using his special kick - Eighteen Dragon Slaying Kick. At the same time, he unwittingly takes a gold medal which is an item of significance of the triad gangs. It turns out that this gold medal is the Lousha Death Plaque bestowed by the leader of the Lousha Gate, Shibumi. Lousha Gate is a powerful criminal organization in Asia. Whoever owns the gold medal has the resources of Lousha Gate at their back. Tiger, unaware of the medal's meaning and significance, is ambushed by the men Ma Kwun sent to reclaim it during his celebrations. As fate has it, he is saved by Dragon Wong who was sent to retrieve the medal;he is the bodyguard of the Triad Leader who rightfully owns the medal and Tiger's estranged brother. The triad goons not only ambush Tiger, but they also interrupt Turbo Shek's meal, who doesn't take kindly to that.
With the medal reclaimed, all would seem back to the way it should be, although it becomes clear that things are very wrong. Out of a sense of duty, Dragon remains with the Ma Kwun despite Tiger's pleas that he can still return to the Dragon Tiger Gate. Dismissing it as another life well past him, Dragon remains. Though Dragon is apart of Jiang Hu- the complicated society of the martial arts world involving different gates of good and evil, working for Ma Kwun, he has kept himself from any criminal activities. Meanwhile Turbo implores the master of Dragon Tiger Gate to take him on as a student. Refused, Turbo stubbornly remains to prove he is worthy of being a student. On the triad front, Ma Kwun decides to retire and returns the Lousha Plaque to Shibumi who is angered by this move. He sends his adopted daughter Lousha to destroy Ma Kwun and his family. When that does not go smoothly, with Dragon, Tiger and Turbo Shek at the center of it, it catches Shibumi's eyes. The glimmer of worthy opponents moves him to pay a visit to Dragon Tiger Gate. The illusion of 'as it should be' opens everyone's eyes. [s1]
